How to Read Lumos Stories on a Flight Without Wi-Fi

Download your Lumos story before the flight, save it on the device you are taking, and check that it opens in airplane mode. Once the EPUB or PDF is on your device, you can read it without Wi-Fi.

Download the Lumos story before your flight

You need an internet connection to download the story, so prepare it before you leave.

1. Find the story on lumos.sycophanthex.com.
2. Copy its story URL. It should look like this:

3. Open the Lumos downloader.
4. Paste the story link into WP Downloader.
5. Choose EPUB or PDF, then decide whether to include the story’s images.
6. Download the file and save it on the device you will use during the flight.

WP Downloader is a free web tool, and there is nothing to install. EPUB is free for everyone. Creating a PDF requires a free Discord sign-in.

If the story gets new chapters later, download it again. WP Downloader cannot add new chapters to an existing EPUB.

Choose EPUB or PDF

Choose EPUB if you plan to use an ebook app or send the story to an e-reader. EPUB also works with Amazon’s Send to Kindle service.

Choose PDF if you want to read the story in a PDF reader. Creating a PDF with WP Downloader requires a free Discord sign-in.

WP Downloader does not create MOBI, AZW3, or TXT files. Amazon’s Send to Kindle accepts EPUB and PDF files but no longer accepts MOBI.

Put the story on your travel device

Make sure the downloaded file is available on the device and in the app you will use on the plane.

Phone or tablet

Download the EPUB or PDF to your phone or tablet while you are online. Open the EPUB in an EPUB reader or the PDF in a PDF reader.

Open the file once before your trip. Check that the story loads and that you know which app to use.

Kindle e-reader or Kindle app

Send the file to Kindle before your flight. Delivery requires an internet connection, though you can read the book offline after it arrives.

Amazon accepts EPUB and PDF files through Send to Kindle. You can deliver them by email to your Kindle’s Send-to-Kindle address, with the Send to Kindle app, or through the web service. Amazon converts the EPUB and adds the book to your Kindle library, where it can appear on Kindle e-readers and in the Kindle app.

If you send the file by email, it must come from an approved sender address. Follow the Lumos to Kindle guide before you leave.

Open the delivered book on your Kindle or in the Kindle app while you still have a connection. This confirms that the device has received it.

Kobo

Download the Lumos story as an EPUB and move it to your Kobo before leaving. The Lumos on Kobo guide explains the device-specific steps.

Open the story on your Kobo after transferring it to check that it is ready for offline reading.

Laptop

Save the EPUB or PDF on the laptop instead of leaving it on a website. Open EPUB files with an EPUB reader and PDF files with a PDF reader.

Test the file before the flight to make sure your chosen app can open it without another download.

Test it in airplane mode

After saving the story to your device, turn on airplane mode and open it. Move through a few pages to confirm that the complete file is available offline.

If it does not open, turn airplane mode off and fix the problem while you still have internet access. You may need to download the file again, finish sending it to Kindle, transfer it to your Kobo, or use a suitable EPUB or PDF reader.

Keep the file on your device until the trip is over. If you want to read on more than one device, prepare and test each device separately.
