How to put an AO3 story on a Kindle with calibre
You can put an Archive of Our Own story on a Kindle without using Amazon’s Send to Kindle service. First, download the story as an EPUB with WP Downloader. You can then add it to calibre, convert it to AZW3, and transfer it to your Kindle over USB.
This method works with Kindle e-readers connected to a Windows, macOS, or Linux computer. Calibre is a free e-book manager. WP Downloader is a free web tool, so you do not need to install it.
What you need
Have these ready before you start:
- The AO3 work link
- A computer with calibre installed
- Your Kindle e-reader
- A USB cable that connects the Kindle to the computer
An AO3 story link usually looks like this:

Step 1: Download the AO3 story as an EPUB
Open the AO3 downloader and paste the story link into the box. WP Downloader detects the site and downloads the whole story. It does not download individual AO3 chapters or lists.
Select EPUB as the output format. EPUB is free for everyone, and you can choose whether to include the story’s images. WP Downloader does not create MOBI or AZW3 files. You will use calibre to convert the EPUB for your Kindle.
You can sign in to your AO3 account if you need to reach a members-only story that your account can already read. WP Downloader uses your account credentials only to fetch the story you requested and does not bypass access restrictions.

Step 2: Add the EPUB to calibre
Open calibre and select Add books, then choose the EPUB you downloaded.
The story will appear in your calibre library. You can edit its metadata or cover before transferring it, or continue to the conversion if you do not need to make changes.
You can also check the EPUB in calibre’s e-book viewer. The viewer has a Read aloud feature.
Step 3: Convert the EPUB to AZW3
Select the story in your calibre library and choose the option to convert books. Set the output format to AZW3 and start the conversion.
AZW3 is a Kindle format that you can transfer directly over USB. Calibre can also convert EPUB files to MOBI or PDF, but this guide uses AZW3.
Amazon’s Send to Kindle service no longer accepts MOBI files. Kindle e-readers can still open MOBI and AZW3 files copied over USB.
Step 4: Connect your Kindle over USB
Connect the Kindle to your computer with its USB cable and leave calibre open while it connects.
When calibre recognizes the Kindle, select the converted story and choose Send to device. Calibre will transfer the AZW3 file to the e-reader over USB.
Once the transfer is complete, disconnect the Kindle and open the story on the device. You can read it without an internet connection or the Send to Kindle service.
When to use USB instead of Send to Kindle
USB transfer may suit you if you already manage your books in calibre or want to convert the EPUB to AZW3 before copying it to your Kindle. The file goes directly to the connected device instead of being uploaded through Amazon’s Send to Kindle service.

Updating a story with new chapters
WP Downloader cannot update an EPUB already in your calibre library. When an AO3 work gets new chapters, download the whole story again and add the new file to calibre.
Convert the new EPUB to AZW3, then transfer it to your Kindle using the same steps.
