After the file downloads:

1. Find the EPUB or PDF in the Files app or Safari’s downloads.

On Mac

How Apple Books Reading Goals work

Apple Books tracks:

• How many minutes you read each day
• How many books and audiobooks you finish each year

The default daily goal is five minutes. You can change it from the Reading Now tab on iPhone or iPad, or from Home on Mac.

Adding a SpaceBattles story to your Library confirms that Apple Books can open the file. You still need to check whether time spent reading it is added to your daily goal.

Check whether your SpaceBattles EPUB counts

Apple’s documentation does not say whether EPUB files you import yourself count toward daily reading time.

To check an EPUB:

1. Note today’s reading time in Apple Books.
2. Open the imported SpaceBattles EPUB.
3. Read for a minute or two.
4. Return to your Reading Goals.
5. See whether today’s reading time increased.

If the total rises, Apple Books is counting the reading time on that device. If it does not, the story can still remain in your Library and be read offline.

Make a SpaceBattles PDF count toward the goal

Apple Books counts PDFs toward Reading Goals only when Include PDFs is turned on.

On current versions of iOS, open Settings, Apps, then Books, and enable Include PDFs. On older versions, open Settings, then Books. After turning it on, read the imported PDF for a minute or two and check whether today’s reading time increases.

Include PDFs only applies to PDF files. For an imported EPUB, use the reading test above.
