How to Read AltHistory Stories Offline on a Flight
Download the AltHistory story before you leave and save the finished EPUB or PDF on your device. Once the file is stored there, you can open it in airplane mode without an internet connection.
Download the AltHistory story before your flight
WP Downloader is a free web tool, and you do not need to install anything. It collects the threadmarked chapters from an AltHistory forum thread and combines them into one book.
Complete these steps while you still have internet access:
- Open the AltHistory downloader.
- Copy the URL of the story thread you want to read. It should look like this:
https://althistory.com/threads/some-story-name.123456/- Paste the URL into WP Downloader.
- Choose EPUB or PDF.
- Choose whether to include the story’s images.
- Download the finished file to the device you will take on the flight.
EPUB is free for everyone. PDF requires a free Discord sign-in. AltHistory does not require a sign-in.
WP Downloader downloads the whole story, so you cannot use it to download one chapter or a list from AltHistory. It identifies the story by its threadmarks and collects those chapters into the book. AltHistory support was ported from FanFicFare, the open-source fanfiction downloader.

Choose a format for your device
The best format depends on the device and reading app you plan to use.
Phone or tablet
Choose EPUB for an EPUB-compatible reading app. If you prefer your device’s PDF reader, choose PDF.
Open the downloaded file in your reading app before you leave so you know it is stored and ready.
Kindle e-reader or Kindle app
Download the EPUB, then use Amazon’s Send to Kindle service before your flight. Amazon accepts EPUB and PDF files through:
- Your Kindle’s Send-to-Kindle email address
- The Send to Kindle app
- Send to Kindle on the web
Amazon converts the EPUB and adds the book to your Kindle library. It can then appear on Kindle e-readers and in the Kindle app.
Send to Kindle needs an internet connection to deliver the book. Send it before your flight, then open your Kindle or Kindle app while connected and confirm that the book is available on the device you are taking.
If you send the file by email, the sender’s address must be on your approved sender list. Send to Kindle no longer accepts MOBI files, and WP Downloader produces EPUB and PDF rather than MOBI or AZW3.

Kobo
Download the story as an EPUB and put it on your Kobo before you leave. Open it once to confirm that it is ready. See reading AltHistory stories on Kobo for the steps.
Laptop
Save the EPUB or PDF on the laptop and open it with a compatible reading app. Test the file before your trip to make sure it opens properly.
Test the book in airplane mode
Check the book before you leave:
- Confirm that the EPUB or PDF finished downloading.
- Open it in your reading app.
- Check that the chapters appear.
- Turn on airplane mode.
- Close and reopen the book.
If the book still opens, it is stored on your device and ready for the flight.
When the AltHistory thread gets new threadmarked chapters, download the story again to include them. WP Downloader cannot update an existing EPUB with new chapters.
