How to Track Syosetu Stories with Goodreads, StoryGraph, or Calibre

Many Shousetsuka ni Narou stories are missing from Goodreads and The StoryGraph. You can download a story with WP Downloader, then look for it on either service. Goodreads lets eligible members add a missing book by hand. For The StoryGraph, check its current help pages. You can also keep your own reading list in calibre.

Download the Syosetu story

WP Downloader is a free web tool that does not require installation. It supports stories from ncode.syosetu.com and novel18.syosetu.com, with no sign-in required.

A typical story address looks like this:

To download a story:

1. Open the Syosetu downloader.
2. Paste the story URL into the box.
3. Choose whether to include the story’s images.
4. Download the EPUB.

EPUB downloads are free for everyone. PDF is also available after a free Discord sign-in.

WP Downloader downloads the whole story. It does not download single chapters or reading lists from Syosetu. When the author publishes more chapters, download the story again to get them. WPD cannot update an EPUB already on your device.

Add the story to Goodreads

Search Goodreads before adding anything. Most fanfiction and web serials are absent from its database, but someone may already have added the story.

If you cannot find it, an eligible Goodreads member can add it at goodreads.com/book/new. The account must have a verified email address and cannot be brand new. Goodreads requires at least:

• The story title
• The author

Copy both from the original Syosetu page. Shousetsuka ni Narou stories are in Japanese, so use the title and author shown there.

Once the story has an entry, you can use Goodreads to record your reading. Goodreads librarians handle corrections and merge duplicate entries.

Check The StoryGraph

Search The StoryGraph to see whether the story is already in its database.

If it is missing, consult The StoryGraph’s current help pages. The service does not publish clear official instructions for adding works that are not books, so this guide does not provide steps for adding a Syosetu story.

Keep a Syosetu library in calibre

Calibre is a free e-book manager for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It lets you keep your own reading list without relying on a public book database.

After downloading the EPUB with WP Downloader:

1. Open calibre on your computer.
2. Select “Add books.”
3. Choose the downloaded EPUB.
4. Edit its metadata or cover if needed.
5. Read it in calibre’s e-book viewer or send it to a connected e-reader over USB.

The calibre viewer also has a “Read aloud” feature.

Calibre can convert EPUB files to formats such as AZW3, MOBI, and PDF. WP Downloader does not produce AZW3, MOBI, or TXT files.

Track an ongoing story

Keep one Goodreads or StoryGraph record for an ongoing Syosetu story. Replace your local EPUB whenever you want the latest chapters.

1. Save the story’s Syosetu URL.
2. Download the complete story with WP Downloader.
3. Find or add its reading record.
4. Read the EPUB on your device or in calibre.
5. Download the story again when you want the new chapters.

Each new EPUB is another copy of the same story, while your reading record stays in Goodreads, The StoryGraph, or calibre.
