Read Kakuyomu Stories in KOReader
To read a Kakuyomu story in KOReader, download the whole story as an EPUB with WP Downloader, copy the file to your device, and open it from KOReader’s file browser. WP Downloader is a free web tool, and you do not need a Kakuyomu account.
What you need
You will need:
- The Kakuyomu story page
- A device running KOReader
- USB or Android file transfer to copy the file
KOReader is a free, open-source document reader for Kobo, PocketBook, and Android devices. It also runs on jailbroken Kindles. It opens EPUB and PDF files, so you can use either format available from WP Downloader.
Installing KOReader on a Kobo or Kindle is a separate, unofficial process. The steps below assume that it is already installed.
Step 1: Copy the Kakuyomu story link
Open the story on kakuyomu.jp and copy its address from your browser. A Kakuyomu work URL looks like this:
https://kakuyomu.jp/works/12341234123412341234 Use the main work URL instead of a link to an individual chapter. WP Downloader downloads whole Kakuyomu stories and does not support single chapters or lists from this site.
Kakuyomu stories are written in Japanese.
Step 2: Download the story with WP Downloader
Open the Kakuyomu downloader, paste the story link into the box, and let WP Downloader prepare the whole story. You do not need to sign in to Kakuyomu or install anything.
Choose one of the available formats:
- EPUB is free for everyone and opens in KOReader.
- PDF also opens in KOReader, but downloading it requires a free Discord sign-in.
- Select the option to include the story’s images if you want them in the downloaded book.
WP Downloader does not create MOBI, AZW3, or TXT files. EPUB is the simpler choice for this guide because KOReader opens it directly.
For more help with the download, see how to download Kakuyomu stories.
Step 3: Copy the EPUB to your device
After downloading the EPUB, copy it to the device where you use KOReader.
Kobo or PocketBook
Connect the e-reader to your computer by USB and copy the EPUB to the device.
KOReader installation on Kobo is unofficial and separate from copying a book. For more help with Kobo, see how to read Kakuyomu stories on Kobo.
Android
Copy the EPUB to your Android device with your usual file-transfer method. If you connect the phone or tablet to a computer, you can use Android file transfer.
Save the EPUB somewhere you can find from KOReader’s file browser.
Jailbroken Kindle
KOReader runs only on Kindles that have been jailbroken. If it is already installed on yours, copy the EPUB to the Kindle by USB.
Installing KOReader or jailbreaking a Kindle is outside this guide. For the standard Kindle workflow, see how to send Kakuyomu stories to Kindle.
Step 4: Open the story in KOReader
Open KOReader, find the EPUB or PDF in its file browser, and select the file.
Getting newly published chapters
WP Downloader cannot add new chapters to an EPUB you already have. When the author publishes more chapters, return to the Kakuyomu downloader, paste the work link again, and download a new copy.
Copy the new file to your device, then open it in KOReader.
