How to Use MediaMiner Stories With Apple Books Reading Goals
You can download a MediaMiner story as an EPUB or PDF, add it to Apple Books, and read it offline. PDF reading can count toward your Apple Books Reading Goal when Include PDFs is turned on. Apple does not say whether EPUB files you import yourself count, so you will need to check on your device.
Download a MediaMiner story with WP Downloader
WP Downloader is a free web tool that does not require installation. For MediaMiner, it downloads complete stories rather than individual chapters or lists.
- Find the story on mediaminer.org and copy its address. MediaMiner story links follow this general pattern:
https://www.mediaminer.org/fanfic/s/category-name/story-title/123456 Open the MediaMiner downloader.
Paste the story link into the box.
Choose EPUB or PDF. EPUB is free for everyone, while PDF requires a free Discord sign-in.
Choose whether to include the story’s images, then download the file.
You do not need a MediaMiner account. WP Downloader can download the complete English-language story from its public link.
If the author adds more chapters, download the story again. WP Downloader cannot update an EPUB already in your library. See how to download MediaMiner stories for a general walkthrough.
Add the story to Apple Books on iPhone or iPad
Apple Books opens EPUB and PDF files.
- Open the downloaded file from the Files app or Safari’s downloads.
- Tap the Share button.
- Choose Books.
The imported story will appear in your Apple Books Library, where you can reopen it whenever you want to continue reading.
If Books is not visible at first, look through the other apps in the Share menu.
Add the story to Apple Books on Mac
Open the Books app on your Mac, then either drag the downloaded EPUB into the app or choose File, then Add to Library, and select the file.
The story will appear in your Library. You can import a PDF the same way.
How Apple Books Reading Goals work
Apple Books tracks how many minutes you read each day and how many books and audiobooks you finish each year. The default daily goal is five minutes.
On an iPhone or iPad, you can view and change the daily goal from the Reading Now tab. On a Mac, use Home.
Importing a story does not add time to your daily goal. You need to open it in Apple Books and read it there.
Do imported MediaMiner EPUBs count?
Apple’s documentation does not say whether EPUB files you import yourself count toward daily reading time. Check your device before assuming that an imported MediaMiner EPUB will increase your total:
- Note today’s reading time in Apple Books.
- Open the imported MediaMiner EPUB.
- Read for a minute or two.
- Return to Reading Now on an iPhone or iPad, or Home on a Mac.
- See whether today’s reading time has increased.
If the displayed time goes up, Apple Books counted that reading session on your device.
Make a MediaMiner PDF count toward your goal
PDF reading counts only when Include PDFs is turned on.
On current iOS versions:
- Open Settings.
- Choose Apps.
- Choose Books.
- Turn on Include PDFs.
On older versions, open Settings, choose Books, and turn on Include PDFs there.
Once the setting is on, open the MediaMiner PDF in Apple Books and read for a minute or two. Check the day’s total afterward to confirm that the time was recorded.
Choose between EPUB and PDF
EPUB is free to download without signing in to WP Downloader. Apple Books can open it, but Apple’s documentation does not confirm whether personally imported EPUBs count toward daily reading time.
Downloading a PDF requires a free Discord sign-in. PDF reading can count when Include PDFs is enabled.
If you use Reading Goals, test your preferred format for a minute or two before starting a longer reading session.
