Do Ficbook Stories Count Toward Apple Books Reading Goals?

Apple does not document whether imported EPUB files count toward your daily Reading Goal. You can check by reading the imported Ficbook story for a minute or two, then seeing whether today’s reading time has increased. PDFs count only when the Include PDFs setting is turned on.

Add the story to Apple Books

Apple Books opens EPUB and PDF files on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

On iPhone or iPad

1. Open the Files app or Safari’s downloads.
2. Find the Ficbook EPUB or PDF.
3. Open the Share menu.
4. Choose Books.

The imported file will appear in your Apple Books Library.

On Mac

Open the Books app and drag the EPUB into it. You can also open the File menu and choose Add to Library. The imported story will then appear in your Library.

How Apple Books Reading Goals work

Reading Goals track how many minutes you read each day and how many books and audiobooks you finish each year. The default daily goal is five minutes.

On an iPhone or iPad, you can change the daily goal from the Reading Now tab. On a Mac, change it from Home.

Apple’s documentation does not say whether EPUB files you import yourself count toward daily reading time. You will need to check how Apple Books records the imported Ficbook EPUB on your device.

Check whether an imported Ficbook EPUB counts

1. Note today’s reading time in Apple Books.
2. Open the imported EPUB from your Library.
3. Read for a minute or two.
4. Return to Reading Goals.
5. Check whether today’s total has increased.

If the total rises, Apple Books recorded that reading session. If it stays the same, the short session was not added to the displayed daily total.

Read for a minute or two instead of opening and immediately closing the book. Checking the total before and after makes a small increase easier to spot.

Make a Ficbook PDF count toward Reading Goals

PDFs count toward the reading goal only when Include PDFs is enabled.

On current versions of iOS, open Settings, then Apps, then Books, and turn on Include PDFs. On older versions, open Settings, then Books. After enabling the option, open the Ficbook PDF in Apple Books and repeat the short reading test.

Include PDFs applies only to PDF files. It does not confirm whether an imported EPUB counts toward daily reading time.
