How to Back Up FictionAlley Stories for Personal Reading
You can keep a personal copy of a FictionAlley Archive story by downloading it as an EPUB with WP Downloader. The file is a snapshot of the story at the time of download, so you can continue reading it offline if the online version is later edited, unpublished or deleted.
Download a FictionAlley story
WP Downloader is a free web tool. You do not need to install anything or sign in to FictionAlley. For this archive, the tool downloads the whole story rather than a single chapter.
- Open the FictionAlley Downloader.
- Copy the story URL from your browser. It should look similar to this:
https://www.fictionalley-archive.org/authors/drt/DA.html - Paste the URL into WP Downloader.
- Choose whether to include the story’s images.
- Download the EPUB.
EPUB downloads are free for everyone. PDF downloads are also available after a free Discord sign-in. WP Downloader does not produce MOBI, AZW3 or TXT files.
See how to download FictionAlley stories for a more detailed walkthrough.
Remember that the file is a snapshot
The EPUB contains the version of the story that was available when you downloaded it. If the author or archive later changes or removes the online version, your file remains as it was.
WP Downloader cannot add new chapters to an EPUB you already downloaded. To get later chapters or edits, paste the FictionAlley URL into the tool again and download a new copy. You can replace the older file or keep both versions for your own reading.
Keep downloaded stories for personal use. Do not re-upload them or share copies with other people.
Store the EPUB on your reading device
Save the downloaded EPUB somewhere you can find it again, then open it in an EPUB-compatible app whenever you want to read offline.
You may want to keep the original download as well as a copy in your e-book library. A clear filename will also help you identify the story if you download a newer version later.
How you transfer the file depends on your device:
- For an Amazon e-reader, follow the guide to send FictionAlley stories to Kindle.
- For a Kobo device, see how to read FictionAlley stories on Kobo.
- On a phone or computer, open the EPUB in an app that supports the format.
Organize your backups with calibre
calibre is a free e-book manager for Windows, macOS and Linux. It can keep several FictionAlley stories together in one library.
Open calibre, choose Add books and select the downloaded EPUB. You can then edit the book’s metadata and cover, read it in calibre’s e-book viewer or send it to a connected e-reader over USB.
The e-book viewer also has a Read aloud feature for times when you prefer to listen.
calibre can convert an EPUB to formats such as AZW3, MOBI or PDF. This is helpful when a device or app needs a format that WP Downloader does not produce. You can keep the original EPUB as your backup and use the converted file on that device.
A straightforward backup routine
A simple routine is enough:
- Download the whole story as an EPUB.
- Add it to your reading app or calibre library.
- Keep the original EPUB as your personal backup.
- Download the story again when new chapters or edits appear.
- Keep the saved file to yourself rather than distributing or re-uploading it.
Downloading a story while it is available preserves that version for your own future reading.
