How to Put a Dokuga Story on a Kindle With Calibre and USB
You can copy a Dokuga story to a Kindle without Amazon’s Send to Kindle service. Download the complete story as an EPUB with WP Downloader, convert it to AZW3 in calibre, and transfer it to the Kindle over USB.
What you need
You will need:
- The Dokuga story’s URL
- WP Downloader, a free web tool with nothing to install
- calibre on a Windows, macOS, or Linux computer
- A USB connection between the computer and your Kindle
A Dokuga story URL looks like this:
http://www.dokuga.com/fanfiction/story/1234/1 WP Downloader creates EPUB files for everyone, but it does not create MOBI or AZW3 files. calibre can convert the EPUB before transferring the book to your Kindle.
Step 1: Download the Dokuga story as an EPUB
Open the Dokuga downloader and paste the story link into the box. WP Downloader detects that the link is from dokuga.com and downloads the whole story, even when the URL points to a particular chapter.
Choose EPUB as the output format. You can also choose whether to include the story’s images.
You do not need a Dokuga account for public stories. If you sign in with your Dokuga account, WP Downloader can fetch members-only stories that the account can already read. It cannot bypass locked content or other access restrictions.
Dokuga support in WP Downloader was ported from FanFicFare, the open-source fanfiction downloader.
See how to download Dokuga stories for more help with downloading the EPUB.
Step 2: Add the EPUB to calibre
Open calibre and use Add books to add the EPUB you downloaded. The story will then appear in your calibre library.
You can edit its metadata and cover before converting it. This step is optional and lets you change how the story appears in calibre and on your Kindle.
Step 3: Convert the EPUB to AZW3
Select the Dokuga story in calibre and choose the option to convert books. Set the output format to AZW3, then start the conversion.
AZW3 is a Kindle format that you can copy to the device over USB. Kindle e-readers can also open MOBI files copied over USB, although Amazon’s Send to Kindle service no longer accepts MOBI. Because WP Downloader supplies an EPUB, this guide uses calibre to convert it to AZW3.
Add the original EPUB to calibre before converting it. calibre will keep it in the library and create the AZW3 version.
Step 4: Connect the Kindle and send the story
Connect your Kindle to the computer over USB. After calibre recognizes it, select the converted story and use Send to device.
calibre will copy the book to your Kindle, where you can read it offline without uploading it through Amazon’s Send to Kindle service.
This method also keeps the story in your calibre library and uses calibre for the EPUB-to-AZW3 conversion.
To use Amazon’s service instead, see send Dokuga stories to Kindle. For a Kobo e-reader, follow the Dokuga stories on Kobo guide.
Getting newer chapters later
WP Downloader cannot add newly published chapters to an existing EPUB. When the Dokuga story has new chapters, paste its link into WP Downloader and download the whole story again.
Add the new EPUB to calibre, convert it, and repeat the USB transfer. The new copy will contain the chapters that were available when you downloaded it.
Reading or listening on your computer
You can read the EPUB on your computer with calibre’s e-book viewer. Its Read aloud feature can also read the story aloud.
