Apple’s documentation does not say whether EPUB files you import yourself count toward daily reading time. To check an imported The Hookup Zone EPUB:

1. Note today’s reading time in Apple Books.
2. Open the imported EPUB.
3. Read for a minute or two.
4. Return to the Reading Now tab on an iPhone or iPad, or Home on a Mac.
5. See whether today’s reading time increased.

If the time goes up, Apple Books is counting the imported EPUB on your device. If it stays the same, that reading session was not added to the displayed daily total.

Make a PDF count toward Reading Goals

PDF reading counts only when Include PDFs is turned on.

On current versions of iOS, open Settings, choose Apps, then Books, and turn on Include PDFs. On older versions, open Settings, choose Books, and find the same option.

Once the setting is on, open the imported PDF in Apple Books. To confirm that it counts, note the current reading time, read for a minute or two, and see whether the total increases.
