Do Potions and Snitches Stories Count Toward Apple Books Goals?

You can read downloaded Potions and Snitches stories in Apple Books. Apple does not clearly document whether imported EPUB files count toward the daily Reading Goal, so you will need to test this on your device. PDFs count when the Include PDFs setting is turned on.

Download a story with WP Downloader

WP Downloader is a free web tool that requires no installation. It supports links from potionsandsnitches.org and potionsandsnitches.net without requiring an account.

A story link usually looks like this:

https://potionsandsnitches.org/fanfiction/viewstory.php?sid=1234

To download a story:

1. Open the Potions and Snitches downloader.
2. Copy the address of the story you want.
3. Paste the story link into the downloader.
4. Choose EPUB or PDF.
5. Choose whether to include the story’s images.
6. Download the file to your device.

EPUB downloads are free for everyone. PDF downloads require a free Discord sign-in. For Potions and Snitches, WP Downloader downloads the complete story. It cannot download an individual chapter or a list.

WP Downloader cannot add new chapters to an existing EPUB. If the story is updated, download it again to get the newer version.

Support for Potions and Snitches and the other fiction archives in WP Downloader was ported from FanFicFare, the open-source fanfiction downloader.

Add the story to Apple Books

Apple Books opens EPUB and PDF files on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. After you import a file, it appears in your Library.

On iPhone or iPad

After downloading the story:

1. Open the Files app or Safari’s downloads.
2. Find the EPUB or PDF.
3. Open the Share menu.
4. Choose Books.

Apple Books will open and add the file to your Library.

On Mac

Open the Books app and drag the EPUB into it. You can also open the File menu, choose Add to Library, and select the downloaded file.

The story will then appear in your Apple Books Library.

How Apple Books Reading Goals work

Apple Books tracks how many minutes you read each day and how many books and audiobooks you finish each year.

The daily goal is five minutes by default. You can change it from the Reading Now tab on an iPhone or iPad, or from Home on a Mac.

WP Downloader creates the EPUB or PDF. Apple Books controls whether the time spent reading that file is recorded.

Check whether an imported EPUB counts

Apple’s documentation does not say whether EPUB files you import yourself count toward daily reading time. You can check with a short test:

1. Note today’s reading time in Apple Books.
2. Open the imported Potions and Snitches EPUB.
3. Read for a minute or two.
4. Return to Reading Now on an iPhone or iPad, or Home on a Mac.
5. Check whether today’s reading time has increased.

If the total goes up, Apple Books is recording the time spent reading that imported story. If it stays the same, the EPUB may not be contributing to the daily goal on your device.

Read only the imported story during the test so that changes to the total are easier to identify.

Make a downloaded PDF count

PDFs count toward the reading goal only when Include PDFs is enabled.

On current versions of iOS:

1. Open Settings.
2. Choose Apps.
3. Choose Books.
4. Turn on Include PDFs.

On older versions of iOS, open Settings, choose Books, and turn on Include PDFs.

Once the setting is enabled, open the PDF in Apple Books and read for a minute or two. Then return to the Reading Now tab and check whether the day’s reading time has increased.

Download updated stories again

A downloaded story does not receive new chapters automatically. Return to WP Downloader and download the story again when you want the latest available version.

You can also send Potions and Snitches stories to Kindle or read Potions and Snitches stories on Kobo.
